Hunger Games Review: Kyra
Earlier this year I read a book series that shot up in readers as America clicked “play” on the new movie trailer. I enjoyed it and read it more than once.
But later I came across a web discussion about if “The Hunger Games was poisoning the minds of kids” and “what was the author thinking putting something so violent out for younger readers?” I had not only heard all of this from this discussion, but from other things. I found something completely different from reading these books, but after being asked ‘what did you think when you read the Hunger Games?’ I simply answered ‘I’m not sure’ and shrugged it off.
Later that day I started thinking.
Suzanne Collins wasn’t looking to scare us.
People don’t like these books for violence.
They like it for a message Suzanne Collins was presenting:
Power has nothing over People.
Suzanne doesn’t want the world to come to this:
Pulled from the ruins of what was North America is the nation of Panem, complete with 13 districts and a diabolical Capitol. After years of living under the careful watch of “The Capitol”, the people of the Districts went against the power. Losing, the districts were forced to pay. District 13 was bombed and destroyed. The remaining districts were forced into hunger and were obligated to send one boy and one girl, between the ages of 12 and 18, A.K.A tributes, to fight to the death until a single victor remained, also known as “The Hunger Games”, which was televised and a required viewing for all of Panem.
The book follows 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, who lived an average life in District 12’s ‘Seam.’ Everyday she goes out in the forbidden woods to hunt illegally with her best friend Gale Hawthorne. On the day of the Hunger Games ‘Reaping’, (a drawing of the kids, where Effie Trinket picks the 2 tributes), Katniss Everdeen gets a certain surprise when her sister, Primrose Everdeen, at 12 years old is picked to be one of 24 kids to fight to death in the 74th annual Hunger Games. After being completely shocked, Katniss volunteered to take her sister's place and is soon accompanied by her fellow boy tribute, Peeta Mellark.
Before I go into what others might think I guess I should present my opinion. The Hunger Games is a book about one girl’s bravery and confidence without needing to depend on others, and her love for friends and her sister.
This book is often compared to Twilight. Yet it is not the same. The main character is a girl, but instead of cowering behind more powerful and surreal guys, she is strong and self-assured on her own.
Others may like the Hunger Games because of major tension and the intense action. But I think people will see the lesson.
This book has violence. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. But I hope people see that’s not all it is. I think it is a great book and hope that not only kids read it but adults as well.

I have now put an Mp3 thing on this blog, it is at the bottom of the page!! Right now click on it and search for the hunger games soundtrack! My personal favorite songs from it are "Eyes open", and "ruler and killer", I also like "safe and sound"...go buy some songs today!! Add these wonderful picks to your ipod and that could move you up one level to becoming the biggest hunger games fan ever!
